Sponsored by the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), North West Regional Centre, Chandigarh, the seminar dwelt upon the existing concerns pertaining to learning disabilities among differently-abled students, generation of newer ideas and concepts in the field of special education and orientation of educators towards the needs of students with disabilities.
Eminent educators, researchers and consultants from across the country discussed vital aspects of learning disabilities at the conference.
The seminar kicked-off with a keynote address by Professor Raj Gupta,chairperson, Department of Education, Panjab University. He spoke about the finer aspects of research-oriented special education.
Founder of Optimising Development in Education, Bharti Kapoor, discussed the significance of accepting the limitations and disabilities of children by positively recognising them in the first place. Disabilities such as dyslexia and dysgraphia were discussed in detail by Ruchika Sachdev, course coordinator, Lakshya Center, Gurgaon.
Dyscalculia was explained by Dr Taranjit Kaur, lecturer, Rayat Bahra College of Education. Having developed multimedia in mathematics for children with learning disabilities, Dr Kaur demonstrated effective measures to handle this disorder.
Sardar Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Vice-Chairman, Rayat and Bahra group, called for research-oriented development and understanding of special education. Since every classroom has children with special needs, it calls for a comprehensive and considered approach on part of educators especially at primary levels to deal with differently-abled children, asserted Bahra.
