Ajay Sharma, secretary and director of Punjab Effluent Treatment Societies (PETS), said the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) awarded the project to M/s Ramky Infrastructure Ltd, Hyderabad. This was decided in a meeting held under the chairmanship of S S Channi, principal secretary, Industries, and V K Janjua, secretary, Industries and Commerce and chairman, PETS. Earlier, tanneries used to discharge effluents in Kala Sanghia drain. The leather industry is the first in the state with facilities to treat effluents of 6.5 MLD. The leather complex will now have fully integrated facilities to take care of the pressing pollution problems.
In addition to bringing more revenue, the project will also generate employment avenues, said the secretary. The leather complex came into being in the late 80s’ and two modules of CETP of 1.5 MLD each were planned. After more than six years of re-planning, the second module could not take off because of various hurdles.
