After earning the sobriquet of ‘Dholi’ from her peers, Kirandeep Kaur has proved her mettle in studies and music.

She was in the news for her prodigy-like status after she bagged the first prize in the youth festival for playing the music instrument ‘dhol’ and got the top rank in the district for the third consecutive time in BA, a year ago. She, who lives by music, has however no plans of leaving studies to follow music as a career.

The 20-year-old is all set for another stint with destiny as she plans other surprises: a music album, a novel and a music institute.

Ask her what she wants to achieve academically, the answer is still more surprising and totally different from what one would expect. “I want to finish MA English and then pursue LLB.” Before she is even asked why, she justifies, “I think it is possible to take one’s hobby and career on two different tracks and excel in both.” Kiran is a first year student of MA English at Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town.

With knowledge of playing half a dozen music instruments, Kiran teaches music to some 50-odd students every day. “My students include people from different walks of life — engineers, students, doctors, businessmen and company professionals. Every day it is an enriching experience as I teach people from different backgrounds and cultures. It is fun teaching the same instrument to a 10-year-old and 50-year-old simultaneously but it’s difficult too since I need to have an insight into their minds’ capabilities first.”

She has also taught how to play guitar to some foreigners from Czech Republic, France and Canada, after they came to know about her finesse in playing music instruments. “Music is my hobby and this is something that cannot be removed from my life. But that does not mean I will leave studies or study music only. I chose higher studies in English and after I finish my post graduation, I want to complete LLB too. Finally, I want to see myself as a principal of a college,” she beams.

She says she owes a lot to the city and “even though I have been getting offers from even abroad to teach music there, I cannot leave my city. I have taken everything from this city and want to live my life here only,” she quips.

Giving full credit for her success to her parents, she says, “It is from my father who is a professor in music at the same college that I learnt most of the art I know today.”
