New Delhi Committee led by former chief secretary R Narayanswami will have representatives from Delhi Police, C’wealth Federation, organising committee and agencies that own the venues

Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna has constituted a high-powered Special Steering Committee to minutely review security arrangements at all venues for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The committee will be headed by former chief secretary R Narayanswami.

Government officials said hi-tech gadgets, such as close-circuit television cameras, scanners and biometrics were being procured to secure the venues. According to guidelines set by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the government has identified Electronics Corporation of India (ECIL), a Government of India enterprise under the Department of Atomic Energy, to help the committee in installing and procuring the gadgets.

“The Special Steering Committee has representatives from the Delhi Police, Commonwealth Federation, the organising committee and agencies that own the respective venues,” said Ranjan Mukherjee, Officer on Special Duty to the L-G for Commonwealth Games.

The officials said the overall security arrangements would be taken care of by the Delhi Police, adding that they had plans for an integrated monitoring system to cover maximum points through CCTV cameras.

“The Special Steering Committee, on the other hand, will get into the smallest detail of each aspect pertaining to security — starting from access control and baggage control to the safety and security of sportsmen, visitors and their belongings at various venues during the Games,” said a senior Delhi government official.

The various stadiums and venues that will host events during the Games are Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Siri Fort Sports Complex, Tyagaraj Sports Complex, Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range, Yamuna Sports Complex and Delhi University.
