In an accident reminiscent of Wednesday night’s crash at Chanakyapuri, a 24-year-old man died and four others were injured when their car rammed into a tree at Mandir Marg on Thursday night.
In the Chanakyapuri accident, an executive working with Red FM was killed while three others in the car were injured. In both incidents, the person sitting on the front passenger seat died.
Like the Chanakyapuri incident, police said the five involved in last night’s mishap were also returning from a pub and that they could have been under the influence of alcohol when their Opel Astra smashed into a tree. The police said the accident occurred at 1.25 am; the five men were at the time allegedly racing with another car.
The deceased has been identified as Salim, 24. The injured are Abdul Rehman (34), Mohammad Wasim (24), Wasim (18) and Abid (28). Abdul Rehman was reported to be behind the wheels. All five are residents of Sadar Bazar in Old Delhi.
“The five were returning from a pub when Abdul Rehman stepped on the accelerator to speed past a car, apparently driven by one of their friends,” an officer said. “He seems to have lost control while approaching a speed-breaker near a traffic intersection on Mandir Marg.”
The car (DL 3C P 9617) reportedly jumped several feet after hitting the speed-breaker and went on to hit a tree by the road.
The injured were taken first to Lady Hardinge Hospital and then to RML Hospital.
Salim’s body has been sent for postmortem, which, the officer said, will confirm whether he was under the influence of alcohol.
Additional DCP (New Delhi district) I B Rani said, “From the smell of their mouths and initial investigations we can say he (Salim) had consumed alcohol.” But only the autopsy report can confirm the status, Rani said.
A case has been registered at Mandir Marg police station and the police are taking statements of the other occupants of the car. They were released after preliminary medication.
Meanwhile, Salim’s family members at their Sadar Bazar house said on Friday that he had told them about a party on Thursday evening. His uncle, Bilal, said, “Salim left home around 6 pm. I got to know about the incident this morning.”
Neighbours said Salim and his brothers Wasim and Ladin ran a meat shop in Sadar Bazar area after their father died three years ago.

don't mix the 2 issues. What renuka chaudhary meant was defy the hooliganism and do what you want to do. This incident is different. This is the highway safety department. Only in India we have highways and no law that makes air bags compulsory for the auto makers. Most countries they need to have it by law. Also, there are limits on alcohol contents in the blood. Road rage happens almost everywhere. Govt. can impose laws... responsibility is on the individuals.
All pub goers please take Renuka Choudhary our beloved minister along with while visiting pubs.
Let us ask how does Renuka Chaudhury want to control pub goers to control their senses and drive carefully.
