Local Congress leaders seem to be up in arms against a few fellow party workers and leaders as they have chalked out a list of those “who can pose problems in the coming Lok Sabha elections”.
The list is being forwarded to the party high command seeking strict action against the so-called ‘rebel’ leaders, even expulsion for some. But the final decision is to be taken by the higher authorities.
According to information, the councillors and Congress working committee members who are supporting Gurcharn Singh Galib top of the list.
Nearly seven Congress councillors and eight former councillors had supported Galib and stated that they will ask the party high command to give him a party ticket to contest from the city this time. The proposal had created ripples within the party circles.
As is evident, AICC spokesperson Manish Tewari seems to be the lead candidate for the Lok Sabha ticket though his name has not been finalised as yet.
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President Mohinder Singh Kaypee, while talking to Newsline said, “We are sending newspaper cuttings to the high command after checking the statements being made by the party workers. On that basis, the higher authorities will decide as to who will be retained and who are to be expelled.”
Speculations are rife that former MP Gurcharn Singh Galib, senior deputy mayor Prem Mittal, councillor Bharat Bhushan Ashu, former councillor Balkar Singh, former Improvement Trust chairman Ashok Singh Garcha and several others are in the line of fire.
Talking to Newsline, Prem Mittal said, “I am aware that the local leadership is cooking something against me and a few other party councillors. They are trying to present a very different picture before the high command but I think the authorities are wise enough and will think before initiating any action. Moreover, I very well know my rights. I don’t think I have done anything wrong.”
Although Kaypee has hinted strict action on leaders indulging in ‘anti-party’ activities, it seems to be a difficult proposition for the party to expel so many councillors at one go.
Meanwhile, all eyes at the moment are on the SAD rally on February 23 where Galib might be declared as a candidate for SAD from Ludhiana.
SAD-BJP’s February 23 rally venue shifted to grain market
The SAD-BJP leaders and MLAs held a meeting on Saturday to review the preparations for the rally on February 23 which would now be held at the grain market, behind Arora Palace cinema. It was earlier scheduled to be held at Mullanpur. The meeting, which was held at the Model Town Extension gurdwara, was convened by MP Sharanjit Singh Dhillon and was attended by several MLAs of the alliance. Addressing the meeting, Dhillon claimed that senior leaders of some opposition parties will join SAD during the rally, which would be presided over by the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. Dhillon called upon the workers of both the parties to make the rally a success.
