Rajkot Even as a slew of complaints pertaining to the violation of the code of conduct by prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Saurashtra have come in, the local election offices are awaiting instructions from Gandhinagar to deal with the cases for over a week now.

In most of these cases the local election offices have not taken a suo motto stand. They are either awaiting instructions from the election commission or replies to showcause notices from the political leaders.

There have been serious allegations of attracting voters by way of promising grants to the booth with the highest turnout (Morbi MLA Kantilal Amrutiya and Anjar MLA Nima Acharya), to announcing interest rate cuts by Amreli MLA Dilip Sanghani, who is also the chairman of the Amreli District Central Bank. There are other relatively minor charges including huge posters of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders on display at the Saurashtra University and live telecast through huge screens of the BJP party event at Race Course Road , inviting rebels back to the party.

In all these cases, notices have been served, but there has been little action on the ground.

“We have obtained CDs of programmes by Amrutiya and Acharya and have sent them to the Election Commission in Gandhinagar. We are awaiting a reply,” said Rajkot District Collector H S Patel.

The said programmes had been organised at Morbi on March 16, where Amrutiya and Acharya were seen making promises to release grants for booths that polled heavily in favour of the saffron party. The local election office said action will be taken only on instructions from the Gandhinagar head office .

Meanwhile, a showcause notice has been served to the Amreli District Central Bank after Sanghani announced interest rate cuts for farmers. The local election office here is also awaiting instructions from Gandhinagar. “We have collected the necessary documents and sent them to Gandhinagar. Action will be taken following a reply from head office,” said Amreli Election Officer M Bhambhar.

According to reports, Sanghani had presided over a meeting at the bank on March 14, that drew up a resolution for one per cent interest rate cut by the bank.

The Saurashtra University, where authorities did not bother to take Modi’s poster off, has been served with a showcause notice only. Although the posters have been draped with black curtains, registrar G N Jain is yet to reply to the notice sent by the collector’s office as to why the posters were not taken off even after a week after the code of conduct came into force.
