Kolkata, March 1 Residents of Uttarpara in Hooghly district attacked the house of Debdas Halder (40) and beat him up on Friday night for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl.

Halder was rescued by police and admitted to Uttarpara State General Hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. The girl, who lived in Halder’s neighbourhood, is at present recuperating at the same hospital and her condition too is stated to be critical.

“The girl’s father lodged a complaint this morning. We also rescued Halder while the locals were beating him. He is in the same hospital,” said Prabir Roy, inspector-in-charge of Uttarpara police station. With tensions prevailing in the area, a police picket has been set up there.

According to the police, last night, the victim went to Halder’s house. Halder, who was alone at home, allegedly raped her in his bedroom.

He also threatened her of dire consequences if she told anyone of the incident.

However, when the victim’s mother questioned her after she saw her bleeding. The girl was immediately rushed to Kanaipur block primary health centre for treatment.
