Mumbai With issues like global warming and climate change attracting attention worlwide, the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) has decided to offer a new subject called Global Perspectives in its curriculum from 2009. Global Perspectives is one of nine new courses that are to be introduced from the next academic session for students of the tenth standard (Advanced level) and the twelfth standard (International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).

Global Perspectives is aimed at enabling students ‘to develop their own ideas on global issues and belief systems.” Abha Dharampal, Principal, Utpal Sanghvi School, Juhu said,

“Global Perspectives is a subject that will help students to think globally and act locally. The research work will enable students to use their investigative and research skills and apply theory in their own settings.”

Among other subjects that will be introduced are IGCSE Cambridge International Mathematics, IGCSE Twenty-First Century Science, and a new IGCSE English syllabus.

Cambridge IGCSE India Studies will give students the opportunity to learn about India’s heritage, geography and culture. Twenty-First Century Science is based on a similar subject in the General Certificate of Secondary Education syllabus in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and is meant to meet the needs of students ‘who are not traditional scientists, but who would like to follow a course which emphasises on the development of scientific literacy, enabling students to make sense of the science they come across in every day life.’

Another new subject on the anvil is Cambridge IGCSE Enterprise. Students of CIE will now have the flexibility to choose any five out of the 20 sub sections under the nine new subjects.
