Mumbai A compact low-cost portable tele-electrocardiogram (ECG) machine controlled by a mobile or a laptop, which has been developed by scientists of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), will be inaugurated on Wednesday.

This machine will help villagers, where there are no specialty hospitals, during emergencies and those in metropolis who do not have time to visit their doctors and wish to monitor their cardiac health.

The estimated cost of this palm-sized machine is anywhere between Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,000.

Developed jointly by the Electronics and Medical Divisions of BARC, routine inspections and monitoring can be carried out while the patient is at home, travelling or at work. It took 10 months for BARC scientific officers to develop the machine.

“In this era of personal monitoring, people prefer technologies that help them monitor at home or outside as they have no time to visit a doctor. This machine will help the patient to continue working, while the doctor can keep a tab on his health via mobile and can advice him to change medication over the phone,” said Dr G D Jindal, scientific officer at BARC, a key person in inventing the machine.

This will also decrease the load on resources of the hospital that can cater to more demanding patients.

While in villages, where specialty hospitals are still distantly placed, and government hospitals are poorly equipped and also the distance between PHC centers and hospitals pose a major problem, this machine will be a boon for cardiac emergencies as a doctor even at the PHC can monitor the patient by sending ECG graphs to experts and treat the patients on expert opinions.

“Many a times, delay in transporting the patients from village to the nearest city may prove fatal. As the mobile phones are becoming more and more affordable, this new product is ideally suited for rural health and personal monitoring,” said Dr Jindal.

A demonstration of the machine will be made at a theme meeting on Tuesday. “To show the potential of the machine, BARC has arranged a theme meeting where more than 10 industries  are participating along with 100 medical doctors from across the country and officials from the department of information and technology,” said Dr Jindal.

“If the ministry of health and family welfare wishes to accommodate them in their programmes, we are willing to provide them directly,” added Dr Jindal.

Even though tele-ECG machines are being used widely in developed countries, this is the first ever Indian machine and will soon be available at much cheaper rate.
