Chandigarh Tapping the potential of the youth may be the buzzword for political parties, but for the city unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), it is about combining the vigour of the youth with the experience of the elderly. The BJP, in what may be termed a unique initiative, has recruited around 200 senior citizens who will help in the campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections.

While the recruitment of volunteers for the purpose is still on, the aim of the party is to enroll more than 1,000 senior citizens. The selected volunteers, comprising retired people from all walks of life, will be deployed at the 404 polling booths across the city on the election day.

Prior to the election, they will campaign in their respective areas, encouraging the people to vote. Party leaders said this exercise was undertaken because it was felt that a word from senior citizens in favour of the party might carry weight among the residents.

Election in-charge Yash Pal Mahajan said: “Senior citizens are respected in their locality and will play an instrumental role in motivating the people to come out and vote. We have received tremendous response from retired people and they are eager to campaign for the party. In the coming few days, we will enroll more people.”

He added that the presence of senior citizens at polling booths would motivate residents as the voting percentage of people residing in various sectors across the city was very low. They will sit outside the polling booths and greet the voters.

The party also launched a Senior Citizens’ Cell recently.
