Vadodara It has been months since the Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital administration had floated the idea to shift the patients of wards 1 to 4 to the newly constructed super-speciality ward. Now, it is the announcement of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections which is said to be delaying the matter further.

The four wards of the medicine department located in the old building of SSG campus lack basic amenities and infrastructure. The roof of the building leaks and the staircase of the century-old building is very narrow.

“The stairs are so narrow that it is difficult to take the patients on stretchers. The wards also lack basic infrastructure,” said a doctor on the condition of anonymity.

In view of the persistent complaints, the authorities had decided to accommodate the patients of these four wards in a new super-speciality ward. But while the building has been constructed, the wards are yet to be furnished. The process has been further delayed because of the upcoming elections.

“The building awaits its inauguration which will now happen after the elections. By the time it is made available to the patients, we will furnish the building and decide on the department which will be using the super-speciality ward,” said Ranjan Wala, the additional collector and executive officer of SSG.

It was initially proposed that shifting of patients will subsequently lead to complete renovation of the old building for which the SSG authorities had asked for government intervention.

While the initial plan has been changed, the authorities are instead planning to bring in a temporary solution by installing new elevator to facilitate shifting of the patients to upper floors of the building.

“We are in talks with the PWD and they have assured us that a new elevator will be installed in the building in a month. That is the alternative for the moment,” said Wala.
