New Delhi, February 6: A large number of flights were delayed and about 10 others diverted from Indira Gandhi International airport to various destinations due to heavy fog on Wednesday morning.

Over 50 flights, coming to Delhi and taking off from here, were delayed by up to three hours. About 10 flights were diverted and five taking off to various destinations were cancelled due to the dense fog.

There was no movement of flights between 6.15 am and 9.30 am as the Runway Visibility Range (RVR) dropped to around 100 metres, resulting in implementation of Low Visibility Procedure by the airport officials.

The flight operations resumed after 9.30 am when the RVR increased to 900 metres. The visibility had started reducing after 5.30 am.

Passengers faced a lot of inconvenience as they had to wait for over two hours before the flight operations resumed.

"We had a flight to Bangalore early in the morning (Wednesday) but the sudden fog has delayed our flight by over three hours," said a Spicejet passenger.

As most of the flights were delayed, a large number of passengers at the airport were provided with snacks and beverages by the respective airlines, as per the directives of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
