Lucknow With elections round the corner, Chief Minister Mayawati appears to be desperate in luring the voters by launching a host of development projects, which have already been initiated by the Lucknow Muncipal Corporation (LMC). The twist: she has taken the credit for it too.

Last week, Mayawati laid the foundation of projects proposed under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), which includes solid waste management — Rs 42.92 crore, an advanced slaughter house — Rs 52 crore — and storm water drainage —Rs 325.21 crore. For all these projects, the state government’s share in terms of fund is only 20 per cent.

Consider this: all these projects have already been approved one-and-a-half years ago by the LMC and its executive committee.

Besides, the state government is also taking credit for various prestigious projects which have been entirely funded by the LMC like Kanha Upwan — a park for stray animals to be built at a cost of Rs 3.50 crore and a shooting range and training centre of international standards at a cost of Rs 6 crore. Interestingly, the foundation of these projects have already been laid by Mayor Dr Dinesh Sharma long before Mayawati did.

“We are unhappy with Mayawati’s action. The state government should have spoken to me before including these projects in the list of its achievements,” said Sharma.

“Mayawati also laid the foundation of projects like cleaning of Gomti and beautification of its banks, which the LMC had already done in July-August, 2008 and had also developed over half a dozen parks like Awadh Gargden and Jhulelal Garden on the banks,” added Sharma.
