Surat, February 4 In two similarly hatched abductions, two minors —a boy and a girl — were kidnapped from Laskana village and Chowk Bazaar respectively last week On Saturday afternoon, when 5-year-old Nikash Patel, a resident of Laskana village in Kamrej, was returning home from an Anganwadi school with his elder sister Preeti (7), a youth approached and asked Preeti to accompany him for some snacks. When she refused, the youth told Nikash to come for some snacks from a nearby village and asked his sister to wait for his return.

After sometime, Preeti started searching for her brother but to no avail. She went to her house and informed her mother Kavita. Failing to trace the boy, Subhash Patel, the children's father, lodged a complaint at the Kamrej police station.

In a similar incident, a 7-year-old girl, Surekha Vasawa, was kidnapped by a youth from Surat's Chowk Bazaar area on Thursday afternoon.

Surekha, daughter of a construction labourer, was also taken away by a youth to get her some snacks. The youth, in fact, informed her mother Meera about it and told her thatthey will be back soon.

When the girl failed to return, Meera looked for her in nearby shops and told the police that her daughter has been kidnapped.

Surat's District Superintendent of Police K G Bhati said, “The accused used same modus-operandi in the two incidents. Both spoke in Gujarati and lured the minors into buying some snacks. We are sill not aware about the accused.”

“We have also spoken to Subhash, the boy’s father, regarding any old dispute,” he said.

Bhati added that seven investigation teams have been constituted and the photo of the boy has been sent to police stations in Surat, Navsari, Bharuch, Valsad and Navsari.

“We suspect a gang has become active which is involved in kidnapping minors from poor families. In both cases, parents of the victims are poor and cannot pay if a ransom is demanded. We are trying our best to rescue the boy.” Surat’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-2) Subhash Trivedi said, “We suspect the minors might be trafficked to other states for some purpose.” Trivedi added that the neighbouring state’s police officials have been contacted about such incidents to get some clue.
