At a public meeting organised by the city-based Sahiyar Stree Sanghathan, Madina said she would continue her struggle against the perpetuators till she gets justice. She asked for support from women’s organisations from the city and Panchmahals district. “A woman’s fight for justice is more difficult and I have experienced it. I was also asked to speak about the case and how it was handled,” she said.
The International Women's Day celebrations in Vadodara also saw a mixed bag of demands by the city-based women’s organisations.
The Sahiyar Stree Sangathan demanded a CBI inquiry into the Patan PTC gangrape case, besides conducting a rally from Mandvi to Gandhi Nagargruh in the Walled City area. Elsewhere, the city-based women’s organisation, Vikalp, conducted a get-together of around 150 women in the tribal dominated Narmada district, stressing to appoint a special protection officer to implement the Domestic Violence Act-2005. Meanwhile, the Society for the physically handicapped demanded ramps for specially challenged women in malls and other public places. Trupti Shah, honorary secretary, Sahiyar Stree Sanghathan told Newsline that even while the Domestic Violence Act-2005 has been implemented, it is the social justice officers who are burdened with the additional job as protection officers. As such, the Domestic Violence Act-2005 could not be properly implemented in the state, she said. In the same vein, Indira Pathak, managing trustee, Vikalp, said, “There were two agendas of the draft to be handed over to the Narmada district authorities. While one is about the demand of protection officers or other women groups to check on domestic violence at the taluka level, the other is about giving proper registration number for the work done by women in the job cards under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.”
