Kolkata Fifty-four girls-all minors students of a residential madrasa in Malda’s Englishbazar area-have lodged a complaint of molestation against its chairman.

Police have begun a probe, but no arrest has been made yet.

On Friday, a complaint was lodged with Malda SP Satyajit Bandyopadhyay by the girls of Jamia Fatemahtuj Jahorar Mahila Madrasha at Babupur, all students of classes VI and VII.

They claimed that the chairman, Nurul Islam often called them to his chamber and “touched them indecently”.

They alleged that they were denied food and forced to do chores as punishment if they did not go to his private chamber.

A Class VII student had written to her mother on February 24, saying that Islam had made “obscene comments” to her. Asking her mother to take her home, she alleged that Islam often called her to his private chamber and made lewd proposals. The letter was also submitted to the SP.

“Women officers have been sent to talk to the girls,” said Bandyopadhyay. “If the allegations are true, we shall file a case against the chairman.”

The madrasa authorities, however, have denied the allegations, saying it is a conspiracy by a section of teachers.

The authorities at the Department of Minority Education and Madrasa Education have distanced themselves, insisting that the institution in question is recognised by the Madrasa Board.
