In a bid to boost infrastructure and enter new markets, the Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) is looking to expand beyond the Mumbai region, in to the eastern suburbs of Kalyan, Dombivali, Ulhasnagar, Badlapur and Ambarnath.
At present, the MGL supplies gas in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai regions, and has 3.7 lakh domestic consumers.
The MGL this year will start building infrastructure in these regions and begin operations gradually. It has also decided to set up 21 CNG stations in the Mumbai Metropolitan region in 2009, with plans to gradually increase it by 14, depending on the demand.
“Even now, the potential within Mumbai region is three times the current supply. The gas supply will be unfolded in other regions like Kalyan, Dombivali in a systematic manner,” said P K Gupta, Managing Director, MGL. He added that they were also looking forward to connecting with Dabhol at Navi Mumbai for gas supply, as they prepare to compete with Reliance.
MGL has allotted four plots for CNG filling sites to the families of four policemen who died in the recent terror attacks. Also, it has already taken possession of the government plots at Mankhurd, Ghatkopar, Goregaon and Kandivali. “One of the sites would be given to Tukaram Ombale’s family, while the other beneficiaries are still being discussed with the police commissioner,” said Gupta. MGL also assured that enough security measures are being taken at all their sites.
