Maharasthra drub ITBP to march into quarters

Chandigarh Maharashtra became the first team to qualify for quarter-final as they recorded their second successive victory as they defeated Indo-Tibetan Border Police by 5-2 in a group E encounter of the 57th All India Police Hockey Championship being conducted by the Chandigarh Police on Thursday. With two wins Maharashtra logged six points to advance to the knockout stage.

Maharashtra's goal-getters were Vinod Mangued (20th, penalty and 64th minutes), Anmol Bhosale (42nd), Vijay Jatale (61st) and Niyazulla (67th). ITBP reduced the margin through Suresh Kumar (8th) and captain Sukhdev Singh (66th, penalty stroke). In the second match played at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium, Jammu and Kashmir handed out a 5-0 drubbing to Tamil Nadu in their opening pool D fixture. Jammu and Kashmir scored through captain Gurjeet Singh (13th, 35th penalty corners), Onkar Singh (56th), Sartaj Singh (68th) and Surinder Singh (69th).

ITBP stunned Maharashtra in the 8th minute when Suresh Kumar struck the board. Maharashtra took time to settle down. After neutralising the lead in the 20th minute though Vinod Mangued who converted a penalty corner. Amol Bhosle, Vijay Jatale, Vinod Mangued and Niyazulla added one more goal to swell their tally. In between ITBP were able to score their second goal through Sukhdev Singh by converting a penalty stroke.

Jammu and Kashmir were given a flying start by captain Gurtej Singh who converted two penalty corners in the 13th and 35th minute to give Jammu and Kashmir a 2-0 lead before the half time. On resumption they continued to press hard as Jammu and Kashmir scored three field goals through Onkar Singh, Sartaj Singh and Surinder Singh.

In another match, Sashastra Seema Bal outplayed Jharkhand by 5-2 after leading 4-0 at half time.

SSB completed their pool B programme with one win and one draw. They have to wait for the outcome of the match between Jharkhand and CISF on Friday to decide the qualifiers from this group. CISF and SSB were locked one-all and shared points in their first match on the opening day.

Enjoying territorial supremacy, Sashastra Seema Bal established a commanding 4-0 lead in the first half. On resumption, they relaxed a bit and Jharkhand were able to score two goals through Sanjit Singh (54th) and I Diwan (65th). Sameul Bhengra stole the limelight by scoring three goals (4th, 16th and 25th minutes). In a pool F match, Central Reserve Police Force outplayed Railway Protection Force by 7-1 after leading 5-1 in the first half.

CRPF scored through Simon Tirkey (10th, 19th and 31st), Nemhas Xaxe (8th), Rajender Singh (13th) Toail Ekka (65th) and Rajesh Kindo (66th). After suffering a 2-9 humiliation at the hand of Border Security Force on opening day, Tripura scored their first victory by routing Assam by 10-0 in Pool H match at the Sector 18 Hockey Stadium. Goal-getters for Bihar were Anuj Horo (2nd, 11th, 32nd, 51st), Barna Bas Nag (17th, 60th), Dep Chandra Tigga (6th), Biren Purty (58th), Mahanand Kindo (63rd) and Dhotang Horo (35th). In a group G match, Andhra Pradesh logged full points at the expense of Bihar whom they beat 4-3. Tied 3-all till 59th minute, AP snatched their victory through David Raj who scored a field goal in the 64th minute. Earlier on Thursday, Orissa overcame a stiff resistance from Uttar Pradesh by a narrow margin of 3-2 in a Pool C encounter at the Sector 18 Hockey Stadium while Maharashtra rained goals against Gujarat by 17-0 after establishing a comfortable 7-0 in a Pool E match at the Sector 18 Hockey Stadium.
