Kolkata Noted author Mahashweta Devi on Tuesday pledged support to Birbhum Adivasi Gaota, a tribal outfit formed in Birbhum district against open cast mines.

At a press conference in Kolkata, the Magsaysay award winner said the illegal mining is rampant in Mohammadbazzar, Rampurhat, Nalhati and Murarai areas of Birbhum district, adding that the intellectuals will give full support to the tribal’s movement just on the lines of People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities in Lalgarh.

“The stone dusts coming from these crushers cause several kinds of incurable diseases from which these tribal villagers suffer. In February 2010, after several houses were damaged in Hinglo Panchayat area, the tribals gheraoed the mines and shut that down. However, they had to pay for this protest as hired goons of the owner of the mines tortured them,” she said.
