Jadoo and ET have competition. If actor turned director Satabdi Roy has her way, there will be only one name on the lips of kids of West Bengal— Computer Manush. A cross between Jadoo and ET, Computer Manush is a robot who befriends a kid in Roy’s forthcoming film, Friend. “Bengal has not seen a proper children’s film for a long time. Friend, is for a much neglected section of the audience,” says Roy who is all set to release her directorial venture next week.
Friend, claims Roy, will be an innovative package of special effects and human drama. “The production values are world class, but that doesn’t mean the film is all about style. We have worked on a foolproof script,” says the confident director who also stars in the film. Giving Roy company are Tollywood stalwarts like Soumitra Chatterjee, Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Tapas Pal. “But the film belongs to our child actors. It’s a film about them and I have tried my best to tap their talent,” says Roy. Made with a budget of Rs 1.5 crore, Friend will also be one of the riskiest of genre in the Bengali film industry, science fiction. Though there were credible innovations in the genre earlier (most notably Patalghar), most Tollywood filmmakers shy way from making a science fiction film. “A science fiction film is definitely a risk. It involves a lot of money and also has to be carefully crafted so as to appeal to all sections of the audience. But I’m confident about Friend because it’s an honest film,” says Roy.
