The accused — Sher Ali Khan (23) Munna Shaikh (20) Khalilulla Khan (27) Mohammad Khan (21) and Pradeep Pandey (30) — were arrested on February 29. They are residents of Jogeshwari.
According to the police, Farukh Ibrahim (31) had come to Mumbai last week to buy some old furniture from a person who promised him a good deal. One of the accused, Sher Ali Khan, a Jogeshwari-based furniture dealer and Ibrahim's acquaintance, acted as a mediator between him and the persons interested in selling furniture. He offered to accompany Ibrahim to meet the seller in Marve.
“Ali then took Ibrahim to a lonely patch near INS Hamla where there were three men waiting for them. The trio, with the help of Khan’s driver, then assaulted Ibrahim and made away with Rs 1 lakh. To avoid any suspicion, Khan got himself beaten up and robbed as well. During interrogation, Khan confessed to his involvement in the robbery,” said DCP Makrand Ranade.
According to Senior Police Inspector Jaywant Hargude of the Malwani police station, they suspected Khan's involvement in the case after they noticed that his injuries were superficial and minor in comparison to Ibrahim’s. “Moreover, Khan was the one who had acted as the link between the persons who wanted to sell the furniture and Ibrahim. After we detained Khan and interrogated him, he admitted his involvement in the robbery and based on the information given by him, we arrested his accomplices,” said Hargude.
