Kolkata Addressing a rally in north Kolkata on Monday, Railway Minister and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee defended her long absences from Delhi saying the national Capital is not her home town.

“No one can force me to stay in Delhi. I have been elected to serve the people of Bengal first. Delhi is not my home town. Besides, even Parliament is not in business. So, I have taken the right decision to stay in Kolkata,” she said last evening.

Following the stampede and chaos at New Delhi railway station on Sunday morning, some Congress leaders had raised the issue of her absence from Delhi.

Banerjee described the issue as a “CPM ploy to put pressure on her so that she spends more time in Delhi before the crucial municipal polls and it takes advantage of the same.”

Similar allegations were raised against Banerjee after the recent train disruptions in Mumbai. She was not in Parliament when the issue was raised.

Mamta's Home is not Delhi - so what? by oldindian on 19 May 2010

It is amusing to read IE's concern on Mamata didi's nakraas. As if it is ok for dhigvijay to make stupid remarks against PC's war against naxal. It is almost like PC is waging his personal war against naxal with everybody around him sniping him for one thing or another. Manmohan remains smug during parliament debate. And NDTV is reporting that everybody wants this government back! India has faced so many calamities - ek aur hi sahi.

What a shame! by Patriotic Indian on 19 May 2010

What a shame! She does not even know that she is a Cabinet Minister for the entire country and not only West Bengal!! It is high time that she should be removed as a Minister. Let her serve only West Bengal.

Absurdity of the highest level by xyz on 19 May 2010

This would have been so funny had it not been so tragic. Ms. Banerjee has shown utter disregard to her ministry since she became the Railway Minister. Its true that Delhi is not her home town, but it is her workplace. A ministry as big and complex as Railways can't be on autopilot forever. If Babus is all we need to run this country, what do we elect politicians for?

Mamata comes clean? by deepak on 19 May 2010

Wht not leave her as the railway minister for her state only? this is a national calamity and we need a leader that relfects that sentiment. An outright insult to those who lost their lives for no fault of their own and the railway minister turns a blind eye!
