Kolkata Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday threatened a mass agitation if the voters’ list is not rectified before the elections.

In a press conference held at her residence in Kalighat she alleged the state government is ordering lakhs of ration cards just when the Lok Sabha elections are round the corner.

“Just before the 2006 elections the government ordered the printing of over 2 crore ration cards. Now, when the Lok Sabha elections are round the corner they have ordered over 20 lakh ration cards. The election commission has less staff so they are dependent on the government machinery. The CPM is using the administration and manipulating the system for the past 32 years,” Banerjee said. She distributed documents in support of her claim.

“All we want is impartial elections and a proper voters’ list. We are going to the EC in the state and in Delhi. But nothing is happening. If things do not change, we have to take to the streets,” she added.

Banerjee also lambasted the government for the PTTI students’ crisis, the Basumati impasse and the Dunlop crisis. “The government is deliberately closing down Basumati printing press and harassing the PTTI students. We are sure they will open Dunlop, but just a day before the polls to get the people’s sympathy,” she said.
