Kolkata Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation of the first phase of Dum Dum-Dakshineswar Metro railway extension project on Saturday. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 600-crore but due to paucity of funds the ministry has decided to carry out the project in phases. The state government is supposed to share one-third of the cost of the project, but Banerjee said they did not wait for the fund. The department has already sanctioned Rs 237-crore for the first phase under which Metro route would be extended up to Baranagar.

She said there will be two stations in the 5.2 km long alignment beyond Dum Dum. The stations, Noapara and Baranagar would be named as Ma Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekanda.

In the second phase the line will be extended up to Dakshineswar. Later, it will be extended till Barrackpore while it would be extended up to Barasat via Airport from Noapara, she said. The minister said she has plans to connect Kapilmuni Ashram at Sagar Islands to Kalyani in Nadia through railways.

With the extension of Metro up to Baranagar, a huge area in the northern fringes of the city will be connected with New Garia in the extreme south. At present, due to traffic congestion, it takes about three hours from New Garia to Baranagar. Once the project is completed, the travel time will come down to 50 minutes.
