She was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of 16-kilometre broad gauge line at Amta in Howrah.
Banerjee claimed she had made some amendments in the existing rules in order to offer an attractive compensation package to those who will have to sacrifice their land for any railway project in future.
“We will not require too much of land for railway projects. Still, we will consider sympathetically the plight of those who might have to sacrifice their land for any of our projects,” she said. “If necessary, railways will directly negotiate the compensation with prospective land losers before going for acquisition,” the railway minister said, adding “if we find too many people will be affected adversely because of our project... we will change the routes”.
“The change in the rules regarding compensation was made a month ago. I am making the formal announcement now,” she said.
The railway minister said if her party comes to power in the state, the problem of unemployment will end in a year.
