Kolkata At a time when the CPM is all set to organise memorial service for the late party patriarch Jyoti Basu, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee is gearing up to rake up controversial issues during Basu’s chief ministership.

The Trinamool Congress will felicitate 20 survivors of Morichjhampi, where the police had fired at refugees from Bangladesh who wanted to settle down in the islands. The incident had sparked widespeard outrage against Basu who was the then chief minister.

“Tomorrow, we are going to felicitate 20-odd survivors of Morichjhampi for their struggle. We will also demand fresh probe into the incident and justice to the victims,” said Jyotipriyo Mullick, a senior Trinamool leader of North 24-Parganas said. The party will organise the programme at Kodombogachi in North 24-Parganas tomorrow.

According to Trinamool sources, Banerjee is well aware that the CPM is trying to ride on the sentiments generated by Basu’s demise. She is also unhappy over the bonhomie between the CPM and her ally Congress on the issue of Basu’s death.

Banerjee has directed her party leaders in the districts to combat the sympathy wave the CPM is trying to generate following Basu’s death.

Before leaving for Delhi today, Banerjee held closed-door meetings with her leaders at Trinamool Bhavan. Though the Union minister refused to speak to the media, party insiders said that the matter of CPM using Basu’s memories to regain lost ground was discussed.

Discipline within the party was also discussed and a section of Trinamool leaders was warned against indulging in factionalism and anti-party activities. “Some of the leaders will be axed in future. We have been receiving reports of infighting from a number of districts, especially in school and college elections. All grass-roots level leaders have been asked to keep party unity intact,” said a senior leader who was present in the meeting.
