In her books, Banerjee covers a whole range of topics and experiments with different forms of writing, ranging from essays, stories, poetry to rhymes. While books like Asubho Sanket (The Sinister Signals), Janatar Darbar (The People’s Court), Jaago Bangla ( Rise, Bengal), Ganatantrer Lajja (The Shame of Democracy) and Andoloner Kotha (The Story of Struggles) are collections of her political essays; Ma, (Mother), Jonmaini (Not Born), Smarani (The Street), Nagar (The City) and Ma-Mati-Manush (Mother, Land and People) are collections of her poems.
“The sale of her books in the last one year has been phenomenal. Books worth about Rs 8 lakh have been sold. She has received a royalty of almost Rs 80,000 from the sale of her books in the last one year itself,” said Sudhanshu Shekhar Dey of Deys’ Publishing Company, which publishes the Trinamool chief’s books.
Renowned Bengali poet Joy Goswami attributed the reason for the success to people’s growing desire to known about the leader.
“Reading a book can help us understand the author best. I have read a few of Banerjee’s books to know her better - what she thinks and feels about various issues. Her thoughts and ideas come out very nicely through her writings,” said Joy, who is at present reading Banerjee’s Upalabdhi (Realisation).
Most of the books are easily affordable with the prices ranging from Rs 40 to 100. Banerjee’s writings are a huge hit among children too. Of her two rhyme books — Shishu Shathi and Ajab Chhora — the latter has sold 2000 copies.
Admitting that he does not know much about Banerjee’s writings, theatre-personality Bibhash Chakrobarty said: “People want to know about the thoughts of the real person behind the political phenomenon that Mamata Banerjee is. Speeches delivered during political rallies are not enough to convey the message. That is why people resort to the books.”
