Kolkata Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today chose to skip a key meeting of the Empowered Group Of Ministers (EGOM) in Delhi to discuss a possible petroleum price hike and instead sent a note to Finance Minister and EGOM chairman Pranab Mukherjee urging him not to increase the price of petrol, diesel and LPG, which she said would be against the interests of people.

Trinamool sources said Banerjee urged Mukherjee to not implement the Kirit Parikh recommendations for raising the price of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders.

The Trinamool chief spent the entire day in Kolkata, holding a series of meetings with party leaders to discuss names for mayor-in-council (MIC) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

Earlier, Trinamool had even organised rallies in Kolkata in protest against the Centre’s move to hike petroleum prices though Banerjee herself did not attend any of these meetings.
