On Sunday, Banerjee inaugurated two new local trains — Sealdah-Sonarpur and Sealdah-Canning — at a programme organised at Bondel Road.
“We will not tolerate any corruption,” she said at the programme. “Because of one person the reputation of all turns bad. They are some who take bribes and exploit their position. Strong steps should be taken against such people.”
The railways, she said, needs a large number of coaches and a comprehensive plan is being drawn. There is a huge demand for coaches from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka too.
Her ministry is working with Vision 2020 in mind, which will be able to cater to the demand for the next three decades. “Who ever comes to the ministry will reap the benefits. We work for the people,” she added.
She also announced the initiation of work for a Nursing College in Majherhat. The college will span 4.5 acres and will be set up at a cost of Rs 19.92 crore.
The railway programme was almost hijacked by Mayor Shovon Chatterjee, who announced his agendas one after the other from the dias.
“Water tax will not be imposed in Kolkata. We will also simplify the tax structure,” he said. The BPL list will be augmented and more people will be listed for old age pension, widow pension and pension for physically challenged.
“We will provide additional old age pension to 45,945 more people,” he said. The numbers of widow pension will go up by 19,655 and that for the physically challenged by 17,685. “We will develop sewerage, drinking water distribution in the city and augment the health facilities,” he added.
