Man awarded life term for killing wife

Ludhiana A local court has sentenced Jagdish Chand, a resident of street number 2, Gurmel Park on the Tibba Road, to undergo life imprisonment for killing his wife and also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000.

“Keeping in view the nature and gravity of the offence committed by the convict, he is sentenced to life imprisonment,” said Additional Sessions JudgeM S Virdi, while pronouncing the verdict.

On July 14, 2002, a case was registered against the accused at Basti Jodhewal police station under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on the complaint of Jagdish Singh.

According to the prosecution, on the fateful day, the accused had some altercation with his wife.

In a fit of rage, he hit his wife with an iron rod. Jagdish Singh who was present in the house was told by the accused that his wife Poonam was not doing her household chores well. Poonam was rushed to the Civil Hospital from where she was referred to the CMCH after her condition worsened where she died.

The accused, father of four, fled away from the scene after the incident. The police arrested him on February 14, 2003. However, the accused pleaded innocence in the court and claimed that the police was implicating him.
