Rajkot The woman, a mother of two, is in a critical condition

A 40-year-old man committed suicide by consuming poison on Sunday, a day after he allegedly set his paramour ablaze at Dhari in Amreli district.

While the woman, a mother of two, is in a critical condition, Bharat Mehta died in his residence at Sarasiya village, the Amreli police said.

According to a complaint lodged by Barriya, Mehta had set her on fire at her residence following an altercation over a sum of Rs 50,000 that she had given him for business.

Mehta, however, mentioned in his suicide note that it was Barriya who had set herself ablaze as the other family members had come to know about their illicit relationship.

The police said that both Barriya and Mehta have leveled allegations against each other and they were trying to figure out the truth.

The police said Mehta had mentioned in his suicide note that he was taking the extreme step as Barriya’s suicide attempt had exposed their relationship. He rejected Barriya’s claim that he had borrowed cash to the tune of Rs 50,000 from her.

The police, who were about to arrest Mehta, said, “We have to investigate Mehta’s claims of whether Barriya had set herself ablaze or she had taken the extreme step fearing police action.”
