Kolkata A 44-year-old mentally-deranged man committed suicide at the Shobhabazaar Sutanuti Metro station on Tuesday. The incident occurred at 9.32 am when Sudhir Singh suddenly jumped on the rail tracks while a train was approaching the platform.

“The man was run over by the train and died instantly. The body was removed from the tracks at 10 am and handed over to the Shyampukur police station for post-mortem,” said Metro Railway’s Public Relations Officer P Dutta.

Singh, a resident of Laboni Housing Estate in Salt Lake, was later identified by his relatives. According to them, he was suffering from mental ailments and was undergoing treatment at Lumbini Mental Hospital. “The body has been sent to the RG Kar Hospital. We will further investigate the case after post-mortem. A prescription of a mental hospital has been found in his pocket,” said a senior police officer of the Shyampukur police station.

After the incident metro services were disrupted for about 30 minutes on the down train line between Dumdum and Sutanuti.

‘Failed affair led student to end life’
The 23-year-old Tollygunge-based student, S Dutta, who had committed suicide in his hostel room at the Goa College of Architecture (GCA) in Altinho on Sunday, took the extreme step because of a failed love affair. This was revealed by Inspector Francisco Corte, Officer-in-Charge of the Panaji police station.

“Our investigations led to the finding of another letter in his room, which was addressed to a ‘female friend’. On the night before Dutta ended his life, this girl had expressed her fear to a common friend that Dutta had spoken about committing suicide,” Corte said.
