Mumbai A sessions court convicted a man to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his 16-year-old student in 2004. Based on the victim’s testimony, Additional Sessions Judge VK Shewale, on Thursday found Rajendra Mhatre, a chemistry teacher, guilty of making sexual advances to his student and then raping her at her residence.

The victim, during her testimony, told the court that Mhatre used to teach her at her residence and had made sexual advances to her a couple of times. She added that when she complained about Mhatre’s behaviour to her mother, she turned a deaf ear and scolded the girl for making false accusations. The victim told the court that Mhatre got encouraged when victim’s mother did not react on her complaints.

He on occasions had asked her mother to keep the door of the room locked as it distracted the girl’s mind. Then on November 5, 2004, when the mother of the victim was out for some work, Mhatre raped the girl.

The girl did not reveal the incident to her mother fearing she would not believe her and waited for her father who was in the Navy to return home.

When the father returned, the girl narrated the whole incident to him and also showed him her blood-stained clothes that she had hidden as a proof. The father immediately lodged a police complaint.

The forensic report supported the victim’s claim and considering the evidence at hand, judge Shewale convicted and sentenced Mhatre to seven years RI.
