Mumbai A special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court on Thursday convicted a person of robbery. The convict, Shailendra Jain, was sentenced to five years in jail and fined Rs 5 lakh.

Three other accused in the case were however let off for want of evidence.

On January 9 last year Jain had robbed a house in Vikhroli.

He, along with the other accused, fled with jewellery worth several lakh rupees.

According to the police, Jain entered the house by holding the complainant, Sahibrao Khade, at gun point. As per the complainant, Jain threatened and beat him before carrying out with the robbery. Three other persons- Raju Katade, Rakesh Jaiswal and Rohidas Ghadge- were also arrested in connection with the case. Jain said that the robbery was planned well in advance.

Jain along with the other accused was charged under the MCOCA. The police said that they were part of an organised crime syndicate. It was also alleged that the four were members of the dreaded Ravi Pujari gang.

When the matter reached trial in a special MCOCA court the evidence against Katade, Jaiswal and Ghadge did not prove strong enough to convict them.

The prosecution in all examined 21 witnesses and produced documentary evidence against Jain.
