Mumbai, January 19 Officers of Dindoshi police station arrested 40-year-old Surendra Tiwari, who says he is an ayurvedic doctor, on Friday night for allegedly raping a minor in his Dindoshi clinic.

According to the police, the arrested accused, who claims to be a diploma holder in ‘ayurvedic medicine’ runs a clinic at the SRA colony in Shiv Shakti Complex. On Friday afternoon, Tiwari spotted the victim, a 10-year-old girl, who was playing near his clinic with other friends. Tiwari asked Shankar More, an acquaintance who used to frequent the area, to send the girl to his clinic.

“Tiwari was known to More as he used to frequent the colony to meet his sister. They did not know each other too well,” said Senior Police Inspector Uttam Khairmode of the Dindoshi police station. Khairmode said More asked the girl to go to Tiwari’s clinic. When she went to the clinic, Tiwari closed the shutters of the clinic and allegedly raped her. He then asked the girl to leave by the rear entrance of the clinic. “The girl did not tell her parents about the incident. However, her mother suspected foul play as the girl was wearing her frock inside out. When the girl narrated the incident, the parents immediately lodged a complaint against Tiwari and More,” said Khairmode.

The Dindoshi police arrested More the same day. However, Tiwari managed to escape from the clinic. The team of officials finally traced him to Kurla where he was hiding at a relative’s place and arrested him on Friday night.

“We have charged the doctor with rape. We are also investigating if he was a genuine doctor or just a quack. We are also questioning More if he was aware of Tiwari’s intentions,” added Khairmode.

The duo was produced in the magistrate’s court on Saturday and was sent to police custody till January 28.
