Mumbai A man was arrested by the Tardeo police for attempting to intercept the convoy of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh near a bus stop on the way from Haji Ali to Worli on Saturday night.

The Tardeo police officials said that the arrested person, one Sushil Rane (38), and some other female motorists started protesting when the PM’s convoy was passing, as they were inconvenienced by the traffic jam caused by the cavalcade.

“Instead of allowing the convoy to pass by, some motorists stood in the way and tried to intercept it. Besides, Rane was shouting and abusing at the top of his voice. So, we had to arrest him. Later, when we asked what his problem was, he told that his niece was admitted in Bhatia Hospital for some injury and he was trying to reach there but the traffic jam caused by the convoy had prevented him. We enquired with the Bhatia Hospital, but they denied having any such patient of the name which Rane had provided us,” said Senior Police Inspector Vilas Joshi from the Tardeo police station.

A traffic police official said, “As the PM’s convoy was passing by, we had to take appropriate measures for the security of the cavalcade and this might have caused some inconvenience to the motorists. However, they should not have tried to intercept it.”
