The motive behind the murder, the police said, was to loot.

The body of an unidentified man was found from Old Jail Road on October 23, last year. The deceased was later was identified as Hanuman Sharan Singh (32), a Bihari migrant.

After carrying out a thorough probe into the incident, the police arrested one Shambhu Nath, a resident of Valmiki Colony in Ludhiana on Sunday.

Sources say Shambhu Nath, along with Rohit Kumar, a resident of Sanglanwala Shivala Road, had stabbed Hanuman to death on the night of October 22.

Addressing a media conference here today, Superintendent of Police (Detective) Gurpreet Singh Toor said Shambhu Nath was arrested late last evening while the other accused Rohit Kumar is still at large.

He said the police swung into action after receiving a tip-off about the accused, after which, a police party from the Crime Investigating Agency, arrested Shambhu Nath from near the Jalandhar bypass.

In his preliminary interrogation, Shambhu has admitted to having killed Hanuman Singh, along with his accomplice Rohit Kumar.

The accused had repeatedly stabbed Hanuman Singh with a sharp-edged weapon and fled with his bike along with Rs 2,500. The duo had met Hanuman at a liqour vend near Laxmi cinema, where Hanuman was in a highly inebriated condition.
