Kolkata One person was arrested for allegedly poisoning his girlfriend on Wednesday, the police said. Ajay Baklar, the girl’s brother, alleged that Pintu Pal, a resident of Jagacha, Howrah, took his sister, Gouri Baklar, to Santragachi in Howrah and poisoned her. Gouri later died at the Howrah General Hospital late in the evening.

The police, however, said Pintu Pal, along with another person identified as Patla, was taking Gouri to Santragachi on a motorbike. But on the way Gouri became senseless and so they took her to a friend’s house nearby. Pintu said after he found Gouri’s condition deteriorating he took her to the hospital, where the doctors declared her dead.

Gouri’s friends said she had a relationship with Pintu and her family was aware of it. Gouri used to work in a nearby beauty parlour. “They knew each other for a long time. But whenever Gouri asked him to marry her, he would avoid the issue. About a month ago Gouri came to know that Pintu was already married and so she stopped seeing him,” said a neighbour. She said that though Gouri would avoid Pintu, he would still bother her.

On Wednesday evening Gouri told her family that she was going to the parlour in the evening. But locals saw her going out with Pintu and his friend. Pintu has been remanded in judicial custody. Gouri’s body has been sent for postmortem.
