Mumbai A 27-year-old zari worker from Cheetah Camp, Trombay, was allegedly beaten and strangulated to death on Monday by his employer. The Trombay police have arrested the workshop owner and three others on charges of murder.

According to his family, the victim Sayyed Zaffer Sheikh, had been working in the workshop for around10 years. Zaffer’s father, Sayyed Ibrahim Sheikh, a tailor by profession said, “My son had not reported to work for a couple of days and yesterday his employer sent some workers to summon him. My wife accompanied Zaffer to the workshop but the employer told her to go away. Some other workers took my son upstairs. While leaving, my wife heard Zaffer’s cries but she came away. A few hours into the night some workers came to our house and said that Zaffer had been rushed to Shatabdi Hospital. However, he was declared brought dead.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone VI, Dilip Sawant said, “The postmortem report revealed that Zaffer died due to strangulation and internal injuries. We have arrested Nizamuddin Sheikh and three others on charges of murder. Nizamuddin owns a workshop in sector B of Cheetah Camp and the others are his workers suspected to have assisted in the murder.”

However, Sheikh alleged that Nizamuddin had adopted several ways to mentally and physically torture his son even though he turned up for work everyday. “Zaffer would earn Rs 150 for 12 hours of work but one day of leave would mean a deduction of Rs 100. Zaffer had taken a loan of around Rs 1000-2000 from Nizamuddin but owing to the leave the latter claimed that the amount had swelled to over Rs 11,500. We had tried to repay some part of the loan a few months ago but Nizamuddin refused to take it as there was a danger of Zaffer quitting the job after that,” alleged Sheikh

Meanwhile, the police registered another case of murder after an unidentified body was found under cement blocks near the Trombay creek area.
