The police arrested the accused following a complaint filed by the victim. According to the police, Ritesh Shah, a resident of Khodiar Krupa society in Katargam, recently completed his course and was looking for someone who could guide him towards joining the police service.
Ritesh had even enrolled his name at the government employment exchange office in Bahumali building and was waiting for the recruitment procedure.
In the complaint, he said that during one of his visits to the police control room at Nanpura Bahumali building on December 11, he met Himanshu Panchal, who took advantage of the situation and introduced himself as a CID officer.
Ritesh told him about his interest in the police service, following which, the accused told him that he could help him out and took his mobile number. After three days, Himanshu called him and asked to come with his school certificates and Rs 45,000.
The victim handed over both to Himanshu, who in return assured him of getting a job and told him to wait for sometime. But when things didn’t materialise, Ritesh contacted Athwalines police station and lodged a complaint against Himanshu on Monday, following which he was arrested from the Katargam area.
Athwalines Police Inspector B R Aya said, “We have arrested the accused. We suspect that many more people might have fallen victim to this man, which will be known during his interrogation. We are requesting those people who had been cheated by Himanshu to come forward and lodge complaint.”
Aya added that the police would also ask him as to why he entered the police control room.
Himanshu was earlier working as a diamond polisher in a company in Katargam area, but was jobless for quite sometime.
