Kolkata A 35-year-old man was shot dead in front of the Kavi Nazrul Metro station in Kolkata on Sunday. The deceased, Surinder Bharati, a Jharkhand resident, was chased by two armed men who fired three rounds to shoot him down, said a police officer. The injured man entered the station premises and collapsed.

On hearing gunshots, locals approached the spot and found Bharati near the station’s staircase. He was taken to a nearby nursing home where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Locals managed to nab one of the miscreants who was later identified as one Pankaj Lala, a resident of Bihar. He was kept locked up in a local club and handed over to a team from Sonarpur police station. The police also seized the weapon from him. Lala will be produced in the Alipore Court on Monday even as an investigation is on to find his accomplice, said the officer.

Police said the incident may have been a fallout of gang rivalry. “Bharati was an employee of Lala, a building material supplier, and they stayed in the Garia Bazar area. In the evening, Lala turned up with his accomplice and threatened Bharati who was talking to a relative near the Metro station. Bharati ran for cover, but was shot dead by the duo,” said the officer.

The Metro stretch from Dum Dum till Tollygunge is looked after by the Kolkata police while the extended part is under the surveillance of the RPF.
