The father-son duo, identified as Brij Bhushan and Varun, residents of Ambala, posed as customers and decamped with furniture and electronic gadgets worth lakhs against the payment made by them through cheques.

The duo had been arrested by the Karnataka Police a few months ago on charges of cheating. The two are said to be involved in several similar cases in Delhi, Maharashtra and other states.

On March 31, 2008, one of them posed as a PGI doctor to buy goods from the Sector-11 showrooms. Three days later, when the cheques issued by them to all the four showrooms bounced, the owners realised they had been duped.

Lalit Kumar of Ahuja Furnitures told the police that the two, posing as one Vishesh Kumar and Dr Kapil Chaddha, told him that they were looking for furniture for their new house in Sector 21. Their cheque of Rs 4.28 lakh later bounced.

It was also found that the accused had used the cheques issued in the name of one Tarsem Kumari, who had shifted to Gurgaon from Panchkula some time ago and also lodged a complaint with the bank authorities and the police about her missing cheque book. Interestingly, the accused also managed to get a SIM card in the name of Tarsem Kumari on March 25.

Police investigations revealed that trucks carrying the goods were taken to Ambala from where they were taken to some unknown destination in New Delhi.

“They were arrested by the Karnataka Police for their alleged involvement in similar cases. They have been brought on production warrants to Panchkula and sent to ten-days’ police remand. After the remand period, we expect the recovery of the stolen goods,” said Inspector Baljit Singh, Station House Officer, Sector 5.
