New Delhi The sombre confines of a courtroom in the Karkardooma court complex turned dramatic on Thursday when a man — “suffering from depression” — stabbed his wife in full presence of the judge and other court staff.

The victim was taken to the medical care unit of the court and is out of danger.

Police officers said the incident occurred around 11:30 in the morning. Twenty-six-year-old Vikas Jain was waiting near the metropolitan magistrate’s courtroom along with his estranged wife Geeta. They were in for a hearing regarding a case of domestic violence.

The two had been married in July, 2006 but separated a year ago.

Eyewitnesses said the couple had an argument, allegedly over Vikas’ insistence that they reach an out-of-court settlement in the case where he is the main accused.

Geeta would not hear of it and her rebuff incited Vikas, who then threatened to kill her. Geeta moved away but her husband followed her inside the courtroom and stabbed her with a knife. There was no explanation on how he managed to enter the court premises with the weapon. Soon after he injured Geeta, the staff and others present overpowered Vikas and turned him in. The police detained the man and registered a case in the Anand Vihar police station. Three other associates of Vikas, with him in court, however slipped out.

This incident has blown the top off the slack security in the court complex. This, despite the heavy presence of police personnel on Thursday morning because another court was to hear cases on the anti-Sikh riots of 1984.
