Mumbai Confessions of a chain snatcher came in as a surprise for Kandivali police after they arrested Deepak Chindaliya (25) on Friday night while he was running after snatching a chain on MG Road.

The victim’s cries alerted a patrolling police team nearby and they managed to nab the thief. Senior Police Inspector Surendrakumar Jaiswal from the Kandivali police station said, “He told us that he needed the money for his wife’s delivery. He was a middle-class employed person and his wife wanted to deliver the child at a private hospital.”

On Friday night, the victim, Asha Tambe, who works in a paint company, was on her way back home in Kandivali when she noticed Deepak walking behind her.

“Initially, I felt suspicious as the road was quite deserted and he was keeping pace with me while walking. After some time, he asked me the directions to some address. When I moved closer to check the address he had on a piece of paper he pushed me to the ground and snatched my chain and fled.”

An alarmed Asha started shouting for help and a team of patrolling cops heard her and saw Deepak running away from the spot. He was given a chase and arrested by the police and brought to the police station.

“After being interrogated, he confessed that his wife, who is admitted to the BMC hospital, was unhappy with the situation and wanted to be shifted to a private hospital for delivery. As Deepak wanted to fulfil his wife’s wish but did not have enough money for a private hospital service, he decided to raise money by theft and hence snatched the girl’s chain,” said Jaiswal.
