Singh said the cheque was that of a loan he had taken for the treatment of his ailing mother; he had deposited the cheque at one of the city branches of ICICI on November 28.
A week later, when the cheque was not credited to his account, he checked with the bank. The officials at the bank informed him that the cheque was in the name of Jaswinder Singh Sodhi so he was required to submit an affidavit stating that Singh and Sodhi were actually one person.
Talking to Newsline, Singh said, “I submitted an affidavit to that effect with the bank. Meanwhile, a few days ago, the bank credited a cheque of Rs 1,633, which was also in the name of Jaswinder Singh Sodhi. I needed the money immediately as my mother is quite unwell but the bank officials refused saying that until all formalities were completed I would not be paid the amount. I had to borrow money from relatives and friend for my mother’s treatment.”
Even after submitting the affidavit, Singh’s problems did not end. He learnt at the bank that the amount had now been mistakenly credited to somebody else’s account and Singh would get it only after the amount has been recovered from that person.
Talking to Newsline, a senior ICICI bank official said, “We are aware of the issue and are trying to get the money back. Jaswinder Singh will get his money soon as we are trying to recover the amount which has been credited to a wrong account.”
