An unemployed man who set himself on fire in front of the Sena Bhawan Park on Saturday after pouring kerosene oil on himself succumbed to injuries on Tuesday at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

According to the police, victim Abhishek Choubey, 30, was admitted with 90 per cent burn injuries at the hospital after he immolated himself, after allegedly being denied permission to meet the Prime Minister.

Abhishek apparently took the step as he was “dissatisfied with the way country was being run by the Prime Minister”.

A postmortem examination was later conducted at the Lady Hardinge Hospital and the body was handed over to his father Ramparvesh Choubey, who arrived in Delhi on Monday.

“Abhishek had lost his job five months ago in Kuwait where he was working with a petroleum company,” the police officer said. Being the sole earning member of his family consisting of his parents and a younger brother who is studying, Abhishek was reportedly upset as he was not able to find a new job.

The police are looking into the matter.
