New Delhi Logarithms and the Quadratic Equation, till date associated with Western civilizations, could well have been first discovered in India in the 7th Century. Also, Ayurvedic sages might have been the first ones to know of the therapeutic effects of water intake in the morning.

These were a few of the experts’ findings at a seminar recently held at the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM). The seminar, titled: “Wisdom Traditions Enshrined in the Manuscript Heritage of India”, held from February 16 to 18, attempted to explore information and knowledge in manuscripts from all over the country that have not been brought to light yet. Other finds suggests that the cure for various diseases like epilepsy finds mention in texts written by people of lower castes in Southern India, and that the Ramayana has one of the earliest literary reference to music.

“Although casteism and untouchability prevailed in those times, people of the lower rungs of society retained excellence in their respective fields and the authority to turn this into systematic knowledge,” said K P Ramanunni, a participant, in his presentation. Experts have now recommended the publication of manuscripts from 8th to 16th Century for the next issue of Kritibodha, an NMM publication.
