Kolkata A hardcore Maoist was arrested from Sarenga in Bankura district last night. Pranab Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Bankura, said that Sukdeb Hembram, 18, was arrested during search operations in the forest areas of Sarenga.

Sukhdeb was a member of the armed Maoists squad operating in Bankura and West Midnapore. His father Dilip Hembram (52) was a leader of a Maoist squad operating in Kesia and Goaltore in the West Midnapore. Sukhdeb joined the armed squad of the Maoists a year ago.

Today Sukhdeb was produced in the ACJM Court, Khatra and the court remanded him to seven days’ police custody. In a separate incident, the Malda police arrested Naxal activist Malin Murmu (52), early today.

In April 2006, a case was registered at the Habbibpur police station against some Naxal activists who were collecting funds from the villagers. The police arrested few persons and filed a chargesheet. But Murmu —wanted in the case — was absconding since then. Bhuban Mandal, Superintendent of Police, Malda, said that the police had received information about Murmu’s whereabouts and he was later arrested from the Malda station.
