Kolkata Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today said that the disturbance in the areas affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in the state will not last long.

Bhattacharjee said this on a day the joint security forces achieved a substantial success in the Maoist-dominated areas with the death of Umakanta Mahato, prime accused in the Jnaneshwari Express derailment case.

“I spoke to students from the disturbed areas. They told me that the situation had improved from the earlier days and now classes are being conducted in their schools. I believe that the trouble in the Jangalmahal region will not last long; it will be resolved soon,” the chief minister said at a programme organised by the Backward Class Welfare Department to felicitate people from various tribal communities.

Bhattacharjee said that his government was putting stress on economic development and education of the tribal communities.

“Why should the adivasis be forever dependent on agriculture and the forests for their needs? Why should they not be educated? Facilities have to be ensured for all those among the tribals who can be educated,” he said.

The Chief Minister gave awards to various students from the tribal areas who have excelled in studies.

The CM felicitated writers like Ajitkumar Mandi and Bishakha Majhi, who write in Santhali language, Sculptor Soumen Mardi and Singer Kanuram Soren at the event.

Policy of Partiality of West Bengal by Neh Arjun Indwar on 28 Aug 2010

There are many gaps between the statement of Chief Minister of West Bengal and his administration. How Adivasis will be able to get education when his govt. has already declined to recognized Hindi as a medium of examinations in North Bengal University, under which more than 10 thousand tribal students are receiving college education, who have passed out their school examination from Hindi schools. The West Bengal govt. has recognized Urdu, Nepali as the medium of degree and post degree level exam but not Hindi, which shows how this govt. is carrying out education policy of partiality and unjust towards tribal of North Bengal.
